Têt is the Vietnamese New Year and is the most important festival and public holiday in Vietnam. An example of Têt being the definitive Vietnamese holiday is that 'Têt' itself means 'festival' and is the shortened version of 'Tết Nguyên Đán', which is Sino-Vietnamese for 'Feast of the First Morning of the First Day'. Tet 2021 is on February 12th, 2021 (New Year Eve is the previous day). One of the most important aspect of the Têt celebrations is that it is a chance to begin again, to forget about the problems of the previous year and start afresh. Vietnamese prepare for Tet by cooking special holiday foods, cleaning and painting their house, temples, shops... Têt is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. During Têt, Vietnamese visits their relatives and temples, forgetting the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. They consider Têt to be the first day of spring and the festival is often called Hội xuân. Like other Asian countries, Vietnamese believe that red and yellow will bring good fortune, which may explain why these colours can be seen everywhere in Lunar New Year. People consider what they do on the dawn of Têt will determine their fate for the whole year, hence people always smile and behave in a nice way in the hope for a better year. The most popular food of the festival is banh chung (banh têt), which is made of sweet sticky rice, meat or beans, and spices wrapped in banana leaf and boiled for half a day. The legend is that this delicacy was invented over two thousand years ago by a prince of the Hung dynasty and the king was so impressed by the simplicity and humbleness of this gift that he named the prince as his heir. Traditionally for the Tet celebration, Vietnamese women would wear the áo dài and now there is a kind of revival of that tradition. You can order your áo dài online from us. ![]() 2021 is a year of the Ox. After a year of anxiety and uncertainty, what can we expect from the Year of the Ox in 2021? Feb. 12 marks the beginning of the Year of the Ox. The second animal of the Chinese zodiac, the ox denotes hard work, positivity and honesty that will be manifested in all of us in the coming 12 months. The ox’s earthly branch, meanwhile, is associated with yin, which is slow, soft and passive. Its element is earth, representing “stability and nourishment. It is believed these additional associations and the characteristics of the ox have great synergy and are mostly favorable. For many people, putting out figurines or decorations related to the upcoming animal year involves little thought; In 2021, those decorations will mark the Year of the Ox, a year with significant, deep associations across many areas.
